Embracing Challenge and Growth
Bui Chi Nguyen
After graduating from VNU University of Science, he began his career in game development at Ubisoft’s Vietnamese subsidiary.
He then spent about five years in Japan, working as a BrSE and engineer on large-scale projects across multiple industries.
Upon returning to Vietnam, he managed teams and technology as a development and product department manager.
Starting in 2017, he served as a development manager at a Yahoo! JAPAN subsidiary.
Currently, as CTO of TechX Vietnam, he leads the company’s technology strategy and drives organizational growth.
What are the values and management stances you hold dear as CTO?
For me, technology should not just be a means of solving technical issues, but a tool that contributes to achieving a company's long-term goals. On that basis, there are three values that I hold particularly dear:
- Flexibility to respond quickly to technological trends and embrace change
- An open mind and a stance of respecting diversity
- Fostering a culture that promotes knowledge sharing and healthy debate
I believe that having a team of members with diverse values, experiences, and styles, and an environment where they can learn from one another, is the foundation for innovation and growth.
In management, I emphasize 'building autonomous teams with discretion.' The ideal state is one where teams can think, judge, and operate on their own under flexible and minimal rules.
I also want to foster an organizational culture that welcomes frank exchanges of opinion and feedback, and continues to grow through dialogue and learning.
What are the characteristics and strengths of TechX's development style?
I believe the strength of our development style lies in the attitude of 'try fast, fail fast, and learn from it immediately.'
Rather than spending time aiming for perfection, we emphasize an approach of quickly building a prototype and improving it while gathering feedback from users.
Another major characteristic is how we integrate AI from the initial stages of feature design to enhance product intelligence and competitiveness.
In addition, I feel that another of our strengths is that while we have a flexible and fast-paced development process, we are able to control quality and progress management with a solid system.
What do you think are the characteristics and strengths of TechX’s engineering organization?
I believe the greatest characteristics of our engineering organization lie in its youth, flexibility, and strong spirit of challenge.
Our adaptability to new technologies is extremely high, and because our speed of learning and catching up is so fast, the cycle from verifying new technologies to implementation is short, making deployment in the field very smooth.
What I particularly value is the fearless attitude toward taking on challenges, even in areas where we have no prior experience. Rather than being bound by one’s own past experiences, members approach new things with a positive mindset, naturally share knowledge within the team, and learn from failures as part of their daily practice.
In addition, while taking such swift and proactive actions, our organization has also firmly established a culture of adhering to operational rules and management frameworks. This balance between speed and discipline is another significant strength that I feel defines our engineering organization.
What does a "growth-enabling environment" mean for an engineer?
For an engineer, a 'growth-enabling environment,' first and foremost, is one with a culture where taking on the challenge of new technologies is encouraged and you can experiment without fear of failure.
An environment with a sense of security – where mistakes are not condemned, but are instead opportunities to learn and improve – greatly supports individual growth.
Next, a climate where knowledge and experience can be actively shared within the team is also important.
When one person's knowledge becomes the strength of the entire team, the growth speed of the organization as a whole also increases.
Also, an open and non-hierarchical culture where constructive opinion exchanges and feedback are welcomed is essential.
Being able to tackle problem-solving while frankly exchanging opinions, regardless of position or experience, is a source of learning and creativity.
And finally, a system that properly evaluates both process and results, and where effort is properly rewarded, is also important.
I believe it is precisely because of an evaluation system that feels fair and logical that individual members can maintain their motivation and continue to grow proactively.
What's your favorite part about the office?
My favorite part about the new office is……honestly, it's hard to narrow it down to just one thing.
That's because every area is designed so rationally, creating a space where you can feel a sense of unity and connection as a whole.
From the workspaces where you can focus on your tasks, to the bright and open meeting areas, and the relaxing break and recreation spaces – every place is comfortable, and I feel a positive impact on both my mood and my work performance.
For me, this office is not just 'a place to work,' but an environment that supports growth, creativity, and connection with the team.
What do you expect from new colleagues who will be joining?
From those who will be joining the team, I first expect them to have 'flexibility to adapt to change' and 'a strong desire to learn.'
Because technology, especially AI, is evolving daily, I believe an attitude of proactively absorbing new knowledge and tools will become even more important going forward.
In addition, we welcome those who have a perspective that allows them to see the system as a whole and the ability to accurately define issues. With these abilities, collaboration with AI and coordination within the team can proceed more smoothly.
And one more important thing is the ability to take responsibility for one's role while actively sharing knowledge and providing constructive feedback.
I believe that such an attitude forms the foundation for further strengthening our team culture.
What technological areas do you want to challenge in the future?
Going forward, the theme we want to tackle as a team is maximizing the power of AI in the development and operation processes and building a collaborative system with our engineers.
AI is already achieving great results in the execution phase, and I believe the human role will now shift to upstream processes such as 'defining problems,' 'evaluating output,' and 'designing ideas.'
Therefore, the ability for engineers themselves to provide appropriate and effective prompts to AI, and the ability to construct logic while looking at the big picture, will become more important.
We are working to improve our engineers' abilities, including not only their technical skills but also their product mindset, logical communication skills, and understanding of the system as a whole.
Maximizing the value created through collaboration with AI and building a stronger development organization is our great challenge from here on.
What do you think is TechX's greatest appeal?
I think the greatest appeal of TechX Vietnam is that an 'advanced development mindset' and a 'culture that values people' coexist.
We constantly incorporate innovation not only into our products but also into our ways of working and development processes, and we practice flexible and modern team management.
At the same time, a culture that values an open work environment, knowledge sharing, and the growth of our people is also firmly rooted.
Here, all members are supported to grow in terms of both skill and mindset, their constructive opinions are welcomed, and they have the discretion to tackle challenges proactively.
TechX Vietnam is a place where each individual can be involved in the evolution of our products while feeling the significance and value of their own role.
And above all, it's an organization where you can continue to grow together with your colleagues. That, I believe, is the greatest appeal of TechX.
